Great sources of help

I certainly was not at my best during the initial period. Stress and anxiety lead to bouts of frustration, anger, hopelessness, and it can even cause depression.

As soon as you feel less able to cope, it is important to seek support from someone you can trust.  You can also get help from one of the following:

  • Family or friends
  • Support services offered by your GP, hospital and in the community.
  • Social workers provide education and counseling on financial benefits and referrals to community or national agencies and support groups.
  • Individual Counseling services offer a one-on-one environment where patients and family members can express sensitive or private feelings about the illness and its impact on their lifestyle and relationship.
  • Mental health care providers are available to create a treatment plan to meet your specific needs and designed to help you regain a sense of control over your life and improve your quality of life.
  • Support groups can be a very useful sharing experience. They provide an environment in which you can learn new ways of dealing with your illness.
  • Macmillan Cancer Support offers a wide range of services from one to one counseling for you and your main carer to support groups, information and the provision of Macmillan nurses.
